Chateau
Benátky nad Jizerou Chateau and park
Information

Benátky nad Jizerou Chateau is a former noble residence located in the town of Benátky nad Jizerou, in the Mladá Boleslav District of the Central Bohemian Region. It stands on an elevated site above the right bank of the Jizera River. Below the chateau lies an extensive park, recently restored to its former beauty.

Today, the chateau houses the town hall, the AVE CZ company, and, on the upper floor, exhibitions and storage collections from the former municipal museum, now part of the District Museum of Mladá Boleslav. On the ground floor, visitors can also find Jiří Fiala’s private Toy Museum.

The chateau park covers an area of about 10 hectares and extends only across the hilltop surrounding the chateau. The slopes were historically (and still are) planted with vineyards. From the park's original rich sculptural decoration, only a few pieces remain — statues of the Sun and the Moon adorn the gate leading to the former greenhouses, while figures of Autumn and Winter stand at the lower gate. Sculptures of Hercules and Atlas can be seen on the wall. The dwarfs — caricatures of the chateau’s servants created by the workshop of Matthias Braun — were relocated after World War I, first to Lysá nad Labem, and today can be found in the chateau park of Nové Město nad Metují.
