ZOO Chleby, located near the town of Nymburk, is one of the Czech Republic’s smaller zoological gardens — but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm, variety, and dedication. Founded in 1997 from the private passion of the Fraňek family, the zoo has grown into a modern, fully licensed institution with a rich collection of animals and educational experiences.
Today, the zoo spans over 4 hectares and is home to more than 420 animals across 120+ species. Visitors can admire not only popular mammals and birds, but also a range of rare and exotic animals. One of the zoo’s most remarkable inhabitants is the Douc langur, one of the world’s rarest and most beautiful primates, found in very few zoos worldwide. Other highlights include Asiatic black bears, mongooses, cranes, toucans, a wide variety of parrots, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and aquarium fish.
A special part of the zoo is the Mendel Eco-Center, where guests can explore terrariums, insectariums, and displays featuring snakes, lizards, small mammals, tropical frogs, and fascinating invertebrates such as spiders, stick insects, beetles, and mantises. A standout feature is the stingray aquarium, uniquely built into the counter of the visitor center.
Zoo also focuses strongly on education and family engagement. It offers guided tours, school programs, seasonal events, themed weekends, children’s camps, and hands-on workshops. Young visitors especially enjoy the petting area with domestic animals, the playground, and interactive exhibits that encourage learning through play.
For a break during your visit, the zoo features an on-site refreshment area with seating, offering snacks, sweets, drinks, and coffee. There’s also a souvenir shop, accessible restrooms, and a welcoming, mostly barrier-free environment suitable for visitors with mobility needs. Please note that dogs are allowed only in the newer section of the zoo.
