Mladá Boleslav
Castle Ruins of the Mladá Boleslav Region
Information
Perhaps the most famous wanderer among Czech castles, poet Karel Hynek Mácha, sketched more than a few picturesque castle ruins during his travels. In the Mladá Boleslav region, one of these was the ruins of Michalovice Castle, located right on the edge of the town of Mladá Boleslav. Its massive tower leans so noticeably that it can be seen even from a kilometer away. Nevertheless, it is safe to climb the tower, which offers panoramic views over the Jizera River valley.
Another significant site is the ruins of Zvířetice Castle, near Bakov nad Jizerou. Attentive visitors will spot numerous preserved architectural features, including Gothic and Renaissance portals and stonework.
Not far from Mnichovo Hradiště, you’ll find the ruins of Valečov Castle, considered one of the most beautiful rock castles in the country. While you're there, be sure to explore the surroundings—beneath the castle, you'll discover romantic rock dwellings, once used as homes for the poor.
From Valečov, it's just a short distance to the remains of another rock fortress, the Drábské světničky. These offer breathtaking views of the Příhrazské Rocks and the surrounding countryside.
Also located in the Mnichovo Hradiště area is the charming ruin of Zásadka Castle, where only traces of moats, walls, and the original chateau structure can still be seen today.
